This organization issues a newsletter and organizes social activities and support groups for Bay Area school-aged children and youth.

Family Pride Coalition

The Family Pride Coalition is a national non-profit organization dedicated to equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) parents and their families.

Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN)

GLSEN is a leading national education organization focused on ensuring safe schools for all students. This organization publishes the bi-annual National School Climate Survey of LGBT students in America ’s Schools.

Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund

Lambda Legal is a national organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and those with HIV through impact litigation, education and public policy work. Their website contains up-to-date legal information reflecting case law and legislation across the country, downloadable resources to make schools safer for LGBT students and reports.

National Youth Advocacy Colition (NYAC)

The National Youth Advocacy Coalition is a social justice organization that advocates for and with young people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning (LGBTQ) in an effort to end discrimination against these youth and to ensure their physical and emotional well being. Parents and Families of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG)

PFLAG promotes the health and well-being of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons, their families and friends through: support, to cope with an adverse society; education, to enlighten an ill-informed public; and advocacy, to end discrimination and to secure equal civil rights. Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays provides opportunity for dialogue about sexual orientation and gender identity, and acts to create a society that is healthy and respectful of human diversity.

The Trevor Project is a non-profit endeavor established to promote acceptance of gay and questioning teenagers, and to aid in suicide prevention among that group. Educational materials are available through the website. Additionally, the Trevor Project maintains a hotline for youth. 1-866-488-7386

Equity Institute:

Equity Institute is an internationally recognized consulting agency that assists organizations in becoming fully multicultural. Equity's projects includes Sticks, Stones, and Stereotypes, a highly acclaimed video documentary curriculum module designed especially for high school students. The module focuses on homophobic, racial, ethnic and anti-Jewish slurs, the anguish caused by such remarks, the reasons people participate in name-calling, and what can be done to stop it.

Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD):

GLADD promotes fair and accurate representation of gay people in the media. This includes news and topics, outlines of projects and publications, and events calendar. GLAAD has developed a curriculum to help teach students about homophobia. 

Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Issues in Education: An ASCD Network

The ASCD Network for Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Issues in Education, established in the fall of 1992, is an alliance of heterosexual and lesbian/gay/bisexual educators who work to assure that ALL members of the school community receive fair and equitable treatment in an environment where it is safe to be themselves.

Project 10

Project 10, begun in 1984 in the LA Unified School District as the first on-campus gay-affirmative counseling program for gay youth, has become a model program for other school districts. The program conducts workshops for administrators and staff and has developed the Project 10 Handbook, a resource directory for educators. A curriculum for teaching about gay, lesbian, and bisexual youth is available in Spanish and English.

APA's Healthy Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Students Projects is working to strengthen the capacity of the nation's schools to prevent risky behaviors and improve health outcomes of lesbian, gay and bisexual youth. NASP was a collaborating organization in this project which was funded by a grant from the CDC's Division of Adolescent and School Health.  Training is available using materials developed for this project; please contact Hank Tomlinson of APA’s HLGBSP at htomlinson@apa.org for further information.

Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA). This resource provides useful information in starting and building a GSA.

Human Rights Campaign - The Human Rights Campaign is a civil rights organization working to achieve gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality. By inspiring and engaging all Americans, HRC strives to end discrimination against GLBT citizens and realize a nation that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all.

NASP-endorsed APA Resolution on Appropriate Therapeutic Responses to Sexual Orientation

NASP's own School Psychology Review Mini-Series, "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning Youth:  Their Interests and Concerns as Learners in Schools."  This issue (Volume 29, Number 2, 2000) contains several articles relating to sexual minority youth including topics such as reducing harassment of LGBT students in schools, gender atypical youth, and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender parents.

Pathways to Tolerance: Student Diversity

P-FLAG's "From Our House to the School House:  A Recipe for Safe Schools."  This resource includes information on how to conduct as assessment on school safety for LGBT youth in your local school or district along with other valuable resources on developing professional development activities. 

Safe and Affirmative Schools for Sexual Minority Youth - NASP handout

"What Does Gay Mean?" is a new anti-bullying program designed to improve understanding and respect for youth who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender (GLBT).  Centered on a booklet called "What Does Gay Mean?  How to Talk with Kids about Sexual Orientation and Prejudice," the program encourages parents and others to communicate and share values of respect with their children.  Produced by the National Mental Health Association, this program has been endorsed by NASP.
